Now that the dust has settled, it’s time for me to share with you my Iceland poppies wedding cake that I created for my very OWN wedding last month! I will be doing a post soon with the full round up of the wedding but I thought I’d give you a sneak preview first of the all important cake. All of the pics were taken by our very talented photographer Anushé. She took the most wonderful pictures of our special day and I can’t wait to share the rest with you.

The theme for our wedding cake stemmed from a relatively new obsession with Iceland poppies. This is totally down to the lovely Georgia of Westwood Design who brought the most amazing white Iceland poppies to our stall at A Most Curious Wedding Fair back in March.

I just love the way they are so organic and bendy in appearance and seemingly burst out of their little bristly buds back to front. To me they are nature at it’s quirkiest and are so beautiful to behold in all stages of germination. I really wanted the poppies’ undulating form to come across on the cake as if they were just happily going about their business sprouting in all directions out of the cake.

With Iceland poppies being a little unpredictable in the warm weather, we actually chose some fantastic artificial poppies to fit in the main arrangements as well as on the tables. I love how this picture shows the correlation between the arrangement and the cake. The vases also went particularly well (again inspired by my collaboration with Westwood Design at AMCWF).

The geometrics element came from a love of terrariums. Our wedding invitations, created by my wonderful bridesmaid Jennie featured succulents, cacti and terrariums which became an underlying theme for the day along with the poppies. I wanted to subtly tie in this detail to the cake without overcrowding the poppies and so added a few copper hexagons to the detailing. The finishing touch was the beautiful silk ribbon from Lancaster & Cornish which matched the ribbon on my bouquet also.

I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed creating something more in my life. I absolutely relished every moment of this cake from the tiny fiddly little stamen to curving the emerging poppy heads into place.

I hope you like it too – Do stay tuned for the full wedding instalment which I promise to share very soon!
