My goodness it’s been a busy year so far! I genuinely can’t believe that it’s mid-June already and sadly too long since my last post. Thankfully I have been keeping myself occupied with wedding cakes so I now have tonnes to share with you.
I thought I would begin with one of the most interesting commissions I have had this year – a chance to make an inspired replica of the church responsible for the original inspiration for the tiered wedding cake, St Bride’s.
My lovely bride and groom had their ceremony in this wonderful historic landmark on Fleet Street designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1672. The story goes that a young baker’s apprentice from Ludgate Hill fell in love with his employer’s daughter. After asking to marry her and in order to prove himself he took inspiration from St Bride’s Church and created an extravagant tiered cake for their wedding day.
Given that my couple were saying their vows in this very church, they thought it appropriate to have a suitable replica for their own wedding cake. With a budget in mind and only 90 mouths to feed, I set about drawing up designs and thinking of ways to scale down this vast steeple.
On paper it seemed simple, shallow octagonal tiers, separated by pillars with piped arching detail and a conical floral arrangement to represent the spire. One of the most important aspects for me was keeping the proportions true to the Church and so narrow and tall was key but I still couldn’t believe it when I calculated that it would be over 4.5 feet tall! This was definitely somewhat nerve-racking when the first time I was going to see it fully assembled was at the venue!
The reception was held at the
Tudor Barn, Eltham, which is a beautifully restored Grade 2 listed building dating back to the 16th Century. The couple opted for 3 tiers each of Classic Victoria and Belgian Chocolate sponges.
I’m so in love with this gorgeous cake cutting shot! Huge thanks to Joe Short of Casamento Wedding Photography for sharing all of these fantastic pics with me.
Finally, massive congratulations to the very happy couple and thank you for allowing me to create your inspired idea!
