Sparkles, Glitz and Glamour

If ever you were going to have sparkles, glitz and glamour as your wedding theme, then a celebration between Christmas and New Year is the time to have it! The bride came to me at the end of last year with a limited budget for her wedding cake spread, but big ideas of lots of gold and sequins to match her theme. Rather than go down the well-trodden naked wedding cake route, I created a styled dessert table of decadent little bites for their guests, swapping the usual cake centrepiece for a pyramid of gold embellished brownies!

The wedding reception was held at Loft Studios, Kensal Rise. A huge thank you to Paper and Primrose for the lovely pics and Westwood Design for the little floral finishing touches.

Where else to look for sequins and sparkle than of course Rebecca of Glimmer and Threads who supplied the beautiful gold sequin table cloth.

I created personalised “Oreo” love heart cookies dusted with gold…

Gold dusted hazelnut praline macarons…

Vanilla meringues sprinkled with edible gold glitter…

And sparkly vanilla marshmallows!

For the “cake cutting”, the couple lit sparklers on their gilded brownie pyramid and sliced into a brownie of course!

All in all a wonderful winter wedding celebration don’t you think? Plus all of the cake platters are now available for hire from my new Hire page. Click here for details!

A Floral Wedding Cake for a Chic City Wedding

I am gradually gathering pictures of my favourite weddings of last year in order to do a round up of my Best of 2015 (slow progress considering we are half way through Feb but I will get there eventually!) This floral wedding cake was a firm favourite. There were so many beautiful pics from this chic city wedding though that I thought it was definitely worthy of a full post. The lady responsible for these gorgeous photos is Kirsten Mavric, a London based wedding and portrait photographer. Check out her 2015 favourites here!

The venue for this August wedding was the South Place Hotel, a very stylish hotel situated in the City near Moorgate. It boasts 2 restaurants and 4 bars on site including a Michelin Star fish restaurant where the couple held their wedding reception.

There is also an idyllic sun terrace providing, as the hotel describes it, “a slice of Provence in the heart of London”.

The groom’s sister-in-law happens to be florist, Byrd & Spry and so she created the stunning floral arrangements.

I couldn’t help but share a few of the pics of her beautiful work!

The florals also provided inspiration for the cake: big fluffy roses, brunia berries and hydrangea petals all handcrafted from sugar.

I commissioned LBC favourite, Kate Cullen, to make one of her pretty handpainted silk ribbons in wisteria blue to complete the cake. Kate created a bespoke colour to match the ribbon on the wedding invitations. The bride also contacted me before the wedding in need of some ribbon for her daughter’s dress and so the little flower girl had a matching silk ribbon sash too!

The couple opted for 3 tiers of perfumed pistachio and rose for the wedding cake and a selection of mini bites including blueberry marshmallows, raspberry macarons and vanilla meringues.

I love this cake cutting shot where you can see the bridesmaid peering in for the best view!

And just look at the bride’s incredible dress… isn’t she just the epitome of London wedding chic?

The Naked Wedding Cake

Well the popularity of the naked wedding cake certainly hasn’t waned this year! It is definitely not just a passing fad with so many couple still opting to go bare – whether you’re not a fan of icing, prefer a rustic look, are on a budget or just simply because! They don’t have to be a boring option. I have previously blogged on their versatility (see here) but thought I would do a little round-up of some of my favourites from this year so far…

First up is this colourful number which I created for a wedding at The Proud Archivist last month. With heaps of berries, a cute little (bargain) bunting cake topper from Paperchase and a beautiful selection of edible flowers from Greens of Devon.

Brixton East was a new venue to me and the location for another September naked wedding cake. It was such a great space and the owner was so kind and welcoming – I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a venue with a warehousey feel. The couple had their own bespoke cake topper made for them and I decorated the cake with lots of berries and a handful of fresh flowers supplied by fave florist Westwood Design.

The next cake was for an April wedding at The Londesborough Pub in Stoke Newington. Decorated with berries, little edible flowers from Maddocks Farm Organics as well as a lovely personalised cake topper from Etsy. I’ve had three clients opt for this lovely moon and stars design from JolieEnRose.

This full-on floral number saw me return to the beautiful Gaynes Park in Essex. Lily & May provided the array of flowers which included roses, freesia, astilbe, lavender and rosemary.

Next up was a decadent naked chocolate cake which I created for a wedding at Trinity College in Oxford. The brides sister commissioned the cake and provided the lovely floral selection.

This couple rented an amazing house on the seafront at Whitstable for their wedding ceremony and reception. It was such a unique setting for an intimate celebration and as well as a naked wedding cake centrepiece with crystallised violas from Eat My Flowers, the couple opted for personalised Oreo style cookies, gourmet marshmallows, berry meringues, salted caramel macarons and praline macarons to complete their dessert table spread.

This towering naked wedding cake was for a wedding held at the Oasis Banqueting Hall in Barking, East London. Pink and red berries and cherries for decoration to fit in with the pink theme as well as crystallised apple blossom from Eat My Flowers. Apparently the cake was demolished in seconds by the eager guests!

And finally the simplest of them all, for a wedding just the other week at The Artisan of Clerkenwell. One tier of Belgian Chocolate cake, two tiers of Red Velvet and berries was all this couple needed to complete their cake.

Boho Cakes

We still love the trend for boho cakes here at Little Bear HQ especially as it gives an excuse to get out the feathers! At the beginning of the month I created two feathered cake creations – one for a lovely friend of mine, Sarah the Flower Bird‘s daughter’s 18th and the second for a boho themed dessert table for a baby shower.

I really love this design – it’s ultimate boho elegance and would look equally at home at a country festival wedding as it would at a chic city celebration don’t you think? I certainly would have been happy to have something like this for my eighteenth birthday cake!

This baby shower dessert table has a very laid back boho feel. The guests feasted on a red velvet cake, vanilla meringue kisses, mini lemon meringue tarts, rasberry macarons, coconut brownies and cookie dough cake pops! Yum!

Don’t forget that we now offer fully styled dessert tables too in association with Westwood Design. We will be showcasing one of our collaborations at the upcoming A Most Curious Wedding Fair at The Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane on 6th-8th March.

To conclude the feathered boho round up, this cake that I created for the Most Curious Promo Shoot was also featured on Time Out earlier this month!
