As I’m writing this, it’s a rather grey and gloomy January day outside of my window so I thought I would share this Tropical Paradise Wedding Inspiration shoot as the perfect antidote! So crank up the heating and whisk your mind away to warmer climes…

The shoot was put together by stylist Charlotte Munro and shot by the wonderful San of Sanshine Photography. The concept for the shoot came from the idea of bringing a destination feel to a British wedding. In a country that is notorious for unreliable weather, we wanted to show you that you can bring the outside in with these colourful and light-filled wedding ideas.

Choosing a light and airy venue with plain walls is key to achieving this look. The West Reservoir Centre in Stoke Newington provided the perfect blank canvas for us with it’s large windows which flood the vast chamber with an abundance of natural light no matter what the weather is doing outside!

Cue Susie of Tissue Blossoms to inject that colour and tropical paradise wedding flavour with her incredible paper flower creations:

“I turned to nature for inspiration. Birds of paradise, hibiscus, dahlias, lisianthus, passion flowers, orchids, heliconia, giant jasmine, gerbera and roses… So many ideas! I started a 6 week project of individually hand-cutting and crafting these beautiful unique works of art. Designing with paper creates infinite possibilities where our cold British nature can’t. A stylist’s dream is to have no worries about availability, longevity, size, colour, shape of flowers or allergies that the wedding guests might have, and this is where my flower creations out of paper truly shine. It was a privilege working on this project and seeing the flowers of my imagination come to a reality, knowing they make a lasting artful keepsake as well as a beautiful backdrop for any couple!”

For the cake I wanted the sugar flowers to speak for themselves and to show that you can have fun with your theme! Keeping the icing plain white and finished with a simple silk ribbon, I went big and bold with the handcrafted sugar flowers. I love experimenting with flowers and colours outside the wedding norm and so this shoot was the perfect opportunity to try something new. I created pink hibiscus, orange gardenia, pale pink bauhinia and yellow frangipani with a few wafer paper gold leaves to match the overall tropical theme.

I love all of Charlotte‘s little styling flourishes, from the fluoro pineapples, pretty pink and orange cocktails and the vibrant laser cut mdf place settings which can then be painted in your colour of choice.

The real key to fully achieving this look though is of course having a fantastic photographer who specialises in natural and ambient light photography such as the wonderful Sanshine Photography. She is a true master!

Chocolate Ganache Wedding Cake

Not a fan of icing but can’t stand the sight of ANOTHER naked wedding cake? Then the chocolate ganache wedding cake could be the alternative choice for you! Left bare for a simple, minimalist finish, it remains elegant with clean crisp edges and is versatile in terms of decoration.

The example I have today on the blog is a chocolate ganache wedding cake that I created for a very dear friend of mine this summer. The couple had a low-key marquee garden reception with simple decoration and flowers so this cake fit the bill perfectly with its simplicity.

The chocolate ganache sides were left plain and I created an unstructured cascade of handmade sugar flowers, leaves and berries in my signature “sprouting” style. The blush and neutral colours tied in with the bouquets and arrangements provided by the florist.

As there is no sweet icing, the chocolate ganache wedding cake is also perfect to serve as a decadent dessert as this couple did. Serve it alone or with the addition of cream, berries, ice cream or anything you fancy really!

Huge congratulations to two of the most beautiful people I know. It was a pleasure to spend this most special of days with you and share in your happiness.

The Naked Wedding Cake

Well the popularity of the naked wedding cake certainly hasn’t waned this year! It is definitely not just a passing fad with so many couple still opting to go bare – whether you’re not a fan of icing, prefer a rustic look, are on a budget or just simply because! They don’t have to be a boring option. I have previously blogged on their versatility (see here) but thought I would do a little round-up of some of my favourites from this year so far…

First up is this colourful number which I created for a wedding at The Proud Archivist last month. With heaps of berries, a cute little (bargain) bunting cake topper from Paperchase and a beautiful selection of edible flowers from Greens of Devon.

Brixton East was a new venue to me and the location for another September naked wedding cake. It was such a great space and the owner was so kind and welcoming – I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a venue with a warehousey feel. The couple had their own bespoke cake topper made for them and I decorated the cake with lots of berries and a handful of fresh flowers supplied by fave florist Westwood Design.

The next cake was for an April wedding at The Londesborough Pub in Stoke Newington. Decorated with berries, little edible flowers from Maddocks Farm Organics as well as a lovely personalised cake topper from Etsy. I’ve had three clients opt for this lovely moon and stars design from JolieEnRose.

This full-on floral number saw me return to the beautiful Gaynes Park in Essex. Lily & May provided the array of flowers which included roses, freesia, astilbe, lavender and rosemary.

Next up was a decadent naked chocolate cake which I created for a wedding at Trinity College in Oxford. The brides sister commissioned the cake and provided the lovely floral selection.

This couple rented an amazing house on the seafront at Whitstable for their wedding ceremony and reception. It was such a unique setting for an intimate celebration and as well as a naked wedding cake centrepiece with crystallised violas from Eat My Flowers, the couple opted for personalised Oreo style cookies, gourmet marshmallows, berry meringues, salted caramel macarons and praline macarons to complete their dessert table spread.

This towering naked wedding cake was for a wedding held at the Oasis Banqueting Hall in Barking, East London. Pink and red berries and cherries for decoration to fit in with the pink theme as well as crystallised apple blossom from Eat My Flowers. Apparently the cake was demolished in seconds by the eager guests!

And finally the simplest of them all, for a wedding just the other week at The Artisan of Clerkenwell. One tier of Belgian Chocolate cake, two tiers of Red Velvet and berries was all this couple needed to complete their cake.

Tree Wedding Cake

This weekend I had the opportunity to create another tree wedding cake for a lovely couple that I met at A Most Curious Wedding Fair last year.

They were married at Skinners’ Hall in the City of London, home of the Worshipful Company of Skinners, one of the City of London’s Great Livery Companies. The Hall itself, situated near Cannon Street, is a stunning Grade 1 listed building dating from 1670 when it was rebuilt after the Great Fire of London. Certainly an impressive spot to be taking your wedding vows!

This tree wedding cake is the third that I have created and perhaps now my favourite! I love the simplicity in the colours of the flowers. One of my favourite florists Sarah, The Flower Bird, was in charge of the wedding flowers and so I liaised with her when creating the sugar flowers in order to find something that would compliment her own stunning creations.

I created white roses, blossom, white lilac and senecia which hinted at the gorgeous predominantly white and green floral arrangements.

I also carved the couple’s initials into the bark and finished the bottom of the tree wedding cake with edible soil and meringue mushrooms.

After a mass tasting session, the bride and groom chose Banana Choc Chip, Coffee and Rum and Boozy Chocolate from the Little Bear Cakery menu to go inside their wedding cake.

It’s such a joy to create all of the fine details for a cake such as this and I think that the tree wedding cake felt just as at home in a historic venue in the City as it would in a teepee in the countryside! It also makes an impressive alternative to the naked wedding cake if you are looking for something a little more rustic.

Naked Chocolate Wedding Cake

Wedding season has officially begun here at LBC and I’m excited to share with you this naked chocolate wedding cake from last week. I delivered and set it up at the stunning venue Leez Priory in Essex.

The couple were inspired by a previous naked chocolate cake which I created a few years ago. They opted for beautiful vintage look roses and gysophila from Lily & May as well as the cute little bird toppers from Diana Parkhouse which I have used on several wedding cakes before.

The couple chose flavours from my cake menu which I then customised for them to suit their tastes and overall look.

From top to bottom they had “Banana Choc Chip” with vanilla bean cream cheese icing, “Chocolate Orange” with Cointreau, hidden Belgian chocolate ganache and orange buttercream and “Belgian Chocolate” with hidden Belgian chocolate ganache and vanilla bean cream cheese icing.

2014 wedding cakes favourites

2014 was a great year for Little Bear Cakery and saw the business take a huge step forward. Having juggled a full-time pastry chef job alongside the cakes for 3 years, in September I finally left my job in order to pursue Little Bear Cakery full-time! As I’m sure any small business owner will appreciate, it’s a difficult and nerve-wracking leap and will certainly have its ups and downs but I am really excited for 2015.

And what better way to kick off a new year than with a brand new website also? I owe huge thanks to my long-suffering partner (soon to be husband!) for designing my website from scratch. I am also eternally grateful to my wonderful friend Jennie Webber who has created such fantastic illustrative work in the form of the logo and footer.

So, before I launch head first into such an exciting year, I thought I would share a few of my 2014 wedding cakes favourites…

First up is the infamous tree cake. The first one was created for a lovely couple who were married in February and had their reception at the Barbican Conservatory. I was so happy when they told me their plans for the cake as I love a couple who are prepared to take risks and go for something out of the ordinary. This was also the perfect cake for a wedding taking place in what is effectively a giant greenhouse!

After the success of the first one, I then created another tree cake to travel around to all of my wedding fairs where it received an equally positive reception and even featured as Editor’s pic in Ultimate Wedding Magazine.

2014 was also the year where I finally had the opportunity to explore my own ideas and test out new designs. My first feather cake was one that stood out at wedding fairs and was featured in Square Meal Weddings as part of their East London urban wedding spread.

It then went on to feature as part of a stunning styled shoot by Ruby & Stardust entitled Pocahontas in love in Your Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wedding magazine.

In May I created one of my most challenging cakes to date – a 4.5 foot tall wedding cake inspired by St Bride’s church, the building that is thought to be the original inspiration of the tiered wedding cake!

Ombré remained very on trend in 2014 both inside and outside of cakes!

But nothing was more popular in the last year than the naked wedding cake and I predict they will remain a firm favourite for 2015 also! Here are a couple of my favourites…

So I wish you all health and happiness in 2015 especially to those of you getting married this year! I am feeling the pressure of a 5 month countdown to my own wedding but can’t wait to get stuck in to designing my own cake!

I’ll leave you with this little feathered creation that I made for the Most Curious Wedding Fair 2015 promo shoot. It’s set to be their biggest and best show yet so I hope to see you all there at the Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane on the 7-8 March.

 

Lace Pearl Wedding Cake, Gibson Hall

This morning I’m sharing with you a lace pearl wedding cake from a lovely winter wedding which took place a few weekends before Christmas at the Gibson Hall, Bishopsgate, in the City of London. The bride and groom opted for a beautiful and slightly festive colour scheme of deep burgundy red, cream and a hint of gold.

The inspiration for the cake design came from the bride’s stunning Justin Alexander dress with all-over lace and pearl button back detailing.

The lace brush embroidery design around the tiers was taken from a section of the bridal lace and the piped pearl swags hinted at the pearl button details too. A simple burgundy ribbon and handmade deep red sugar roses were then added to compliment the colour scheme.

The bride and groom opted for three different flavours for their four tier cake – coffee and rum, zesty carrot and red velvet. Have you checked out our new 15 flavour cake menu yet?

Cartoon Wedding Cake, The Proud Archivist

Today I’m sharing with you a cake I made a couple of months ago for a lovely couple who had their wedding reception at The Proud Archivist, Haggerston, a fantastic East London venue situated on the Regent’s Canal.
The inspiration for the cake came from this cute little cartoon that one of their friends drew of them a few years ago. They loved the cartoon so much that they decided to feature it on their wedding invites and menus too – such a lovely personal touch don’t you think?
The little red rose detail was carried over on the invites, menu and cake too and they opted for two layers of red velvet cake as well to finish off the theme!

A Trio of Naked Wedding Cakes

September has been a busy month for naked wedding cakes with lots of couples opting for these berry dressed beauties! Here’s a little round up including all the details of those little personal touches…
This first cake is one of my favourites! Set-up at J and A Cafe in Clerkenwell, the couple opted for fresh berries as well as crystallised wild roses, fresh roses and this lovely bike cake topper with their initials.

 

They had two layers of Victoria sponge and a layer of lemon sponge filled with even more lovely raspberries.

 

Next up is this fun little number that I delivered to Putney a few weeks ago. The couple had a marquee in their garden and put a lot of effort into their DIY theme. The groom even made the amazing cake boards out of a tree from their garden – I don’t know about you but I would happily commission a couple from him – they’re superb don’t you think?
As they are into their diving, the couple asked me to make these little shark bride and groom cake toppers based on something similar that they had seen on Pinterest.
I also made a separate little cake for the bride as she is lactose intolerant so I created this chocolate sponge with chocolate ganache and salted caramel drizzle especially for her!
Last up is this four tier cake set up at One Friendly Place in Deptford, South-East London. The couple opted for four different flavoured tiers and I decorated each tier with fresh berries and cherries as well as white and purple lisianthus, gypsophila and roses. They also had a custom cake topper made of them and their three cats!
To balance all of these naked cakes I am keeping myself very busy in the LBC kitchen over the next few weeks creating lots of lovely sugar flowers…watch this space for some new designs very soon!

Lego Polka Dot Wedding Cake

With another Lego wedding cake on the way in a few weeks, I realised that I still haven’t shared this one from June! The lovely photos are courtesy of fine art film photography by Taylor & Porter.
This wedding had such a fun D.I.Y. feel with a bright colour pop of blue, green, yellow and red. They really went to town on lots of little personal touches which really complimented the 60s building at Imperial College, London where the reception was held.
The groom is a big Lego fan so made the wonderful cake topper and date plaque that sat at the foot of the wedding cake to commemorate their special day.
The polka dots were then added to tie in with the bride’s stunning tea-length wedding dress – so cute don’t you think?!
